It is important that we keep our newborns safe. Baby proofing is one of the best techniques for doing that. Use this checklist to get started on baby proofing.
Nursery
- Slats: Check for any slats on baby’s crib
- Secure Slats: Make sure that all slats are secure.
- Mattress: Check the baby mattress for discomfort.
- Spacious: Remove stuffed animals and leave enough room in the crib.
- Distance: Get safe distance between crib, windows, electrical outlets, lamps, etc.
- Baby’s Pacifier: Keep the pacifier in good working condition.
- Strong Crib: Make sure the baby’s crib is extremely sturdy
- Have a firm and flat mattress in the crib
- Cover the outlets
Bathroom
- Safe Storage: Store medicines/ cleaning products locked away from children’s reach.
- Ideal Bath: Check bath water for ideal temperatures (use a thermometer).
- Attend to the Child Always: Always have your kids around you/ never leave the child alone in a bathtub.
- Electrical Outlets: Cover up all electrical outlets.
- Toilets: Make sure all toilet seats have a latch.
- Floor: Keep all floors dry to prevent slipping. Don’t leave water lying around.
Kitchen
- Electrical Outlets: Cover up all electrical outlets.
- Floor: Keep all floors dry to prevent slipping. Don’t leave water lying around.
- Cooking Pots: Keep pot handles at safe distances (turn them to the back of the stove even when not cooking).
Other Living Areas
- Smoke detectors: Install carbon dioxide detectors
- Safety gates: Regulate the baby’s movements.
- Small objects: Keep away small swallow-able objects.
- Check toys: Check toys conditions and toys sturdiness.
- Baby’s clothing: Get safe cloths
